On the 14th of May Dean Casey of Ennis Track AC set a new Irish U20 10,000m record of 28.57.34 at the Highgate Harriers Night of 10k PBs Meet.
This 52 year old record by Frank Greally was unbroken until March26th when Abdel Laadjel, an u18 year old freshman at Providence College in the Raleigh Relays Invitational in North Carolina broke Greally’s unbeaten record with 29:23.92; just like Greally was in 1970, he’s also a member of Donore Harriers in Dublin.
This was Dean’s first 10k and what an atmosphere to have chosen has his first one. Highgate was just electrifying, the race being run with the crowd within a hands reach, roaring encouragement, cheering and being as close to the race as one could be. Dean looked very comfortable throughout the race with some saying that he had more in the tank at the end of the race. But what a finish. The last 200m just brought the crowd to a standstill, the roars for the “youngster” was infectious. The return of the Italian Cavagna showed strength and determination, twice Dean had to battle to prevent him from claiming the top stop. If there was any race that summed up the yearly growth of this event, this was it. Well done to all the organisers for their amazing event.
The U20 Irish athletes are definitely ones to watch out for, but for today Ennis Track celebrates with Dean Casey on this magnificent 26 sec National U20 10k Record.
